10 Underdogs Poised to Shock Scouts at Combine

Welcome to the Pre-Combine edition of the DraftCast newsletter! Tim Wood here, host of the EssentiallySports DraftCast with Tony Pauline.

The NFL released the list of 319 players who have garnered official invites. We covered the announcement extensively at ES, talking about the biggest snubs, our top players watchlist, and a listing of the top Combine performances of all-time.

On this week’s DraftCast, Tony and I discuss why the combine is so important and the key Combine event that makes non-invites more undraftable.

Tony also breaks down three cases from his extensive Draft history in which that key component changed the trajectory of careers.

And we get in-depth on five players on Tony’s Big Board in our first edition of 60-Second Scout.

In today’s newsletter, Tony breaks down the biggest surprise invites, while Luke Hubbard looks at the biggest sleepers at this year’s Combine, and the newest addition to our NFL writing crew, Kyle Besson, ranks the best NFL Draft classes of the last decade.

And kudos to y’all this week, as we had our biggest mailbag segment yet. Keep those awesome questions coming!

On our Draft big board, you’ll see Tony’s rankings and scouting reports for each prospect. And you can build a watchlist by clicking on the star at the far right of each prospect ranking.

Over four hours after the San Francisco 49ers selected Utah quarterback Alex Smith with the No. 1 pick, a spot that had once seemed destined for Rodgers, he remained in the green room with his family, his agent, and a few others, waiting until the Green Bay Packers finally called his name.
