Until 1973, the NFL had no strict jersey numbering rules by position. The league standardized the system to help officials, broadcasters, and fans identify players on the field.
Before the change, wide receivers routinely wore numbers in the 20s, and quarterbacks could wear numbers like 18. While recent rule changes have re-allowed single digits and No. 0 for various positions, the modern system remains structured compared to the pre-1973 era.
