In 2007, Bill Belichick was fined $500,000—the largest fine ever levied against an NFL head coach at the time—for his role in the Spygate scandal. While videotaping opposing teams’ signals is not illegal under NFL rules, the league strictly limits where such recording can take place. The Patriots were found to have violated those restrictions and ignored a prior league memo, resulting in the forfeiture of a first-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.
