Hey Folks,

Imagine watching your brother’s jersey handed to a stranger before his memory has even had time to settle. That’s exactly how some former Cowboys feel right now, and one of them isn’t staying quiet.

Jerry Jones just made a decision that has the football world asking: Was that really necessary?

The Cowboys are under fire for reassigning a late star’s jersey, with critics calling the move disrespectful.

The NFL’s jersey retirement tradition began in 1935 when the New York Giants retired the No. 1 jersey of star end Ray Flaherty. After Flaherty led the team to a championship and topped the league in receiving, the Giants decided no other player should ever wear his number again. This first-of-its-kind gesture set a permanent standard for honoring the league's most elite icons.

Today, the practice is a rare luxury due to the "roster math" of 53-man teams and strict positional numbering rules. To avoid running out of available numbers, many franchises now prefer "Ring of Honor" induction over formal retirement. This allows legendary numbers to stay in circulation, passing the legacy of the jersey directly from one generation to the next on the field.
