In 2003, ESPN ventured into fictional drama with Playmakers, an original series depicting a pro football team dealing with drugs, domestic abuse, and corruption. Despite pulling in good ratings, the show was abruptly cancelled after one season because league executives hated how it painted pro athletes and threatened to cut off the network’s broadcasting access during upcoming extension talks. 

In a 2004 interview with The New York Times, creator John Eisendrath accused the NFL of acting like bullies, claiming the league pressured ESPN into scrapping the show because it didn't appreciate the series' portrayal of professional sports' dark side.
