A revelation is emerging about who secretly seized the prize from Belichick’s fallback. 

Another day of training camps is officially in the books! Here are our key takeaways from the recent sessions:

• Bengals QB Joe Burrow connected with WR Tee Higgins for a corner touchdown pass during a strong performance in move-the-ball drills.

• Colts starting QB Anthony Richardson Sr. had an up-and-down day before driving for a 2-minute touchdown as he competes for the QB2 role behind Daniel Jones.

• Jaguars WR Austin Trammell made two deep touchdown catches from Nick Mullens against CB Preston Hodge.

• Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb connected on two deep passes, including a 50+ yard touchdown pass over CB DaRon Bland and another over CB Cobie Durant.

• Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell has yet to declare a winner in the QB1 competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy entering the third week of camp.

Before Bill Belichick's omission from the Class of 2026, Mike Shanahan stood as the primary example of an elite coach with an unassailable résumé locked out of Canton. Much like Belichick’s vast coaching tree, Shanahan designed the modern zone-blocking scheme and wide-zone running attack. He mentored current elite coaches like Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, and Matt LaFleur.

Critics and peers argue that Shanahan’s resume dictates a first-ballot lock, making his continuous exclusion highly confusing. He is one of only six head coaches in NFL history to win consecutive Super Bowls. He also won a third ring as the OC for the 1994 San Francisco 49ers. The reason for the snub? 

During the Denver Broncos’ back-to-back championship run in 1997 and 1998, the franchise was found guilty of violating NFL salary cap rules by deferring more than $29 million in player salaries to bypass cap restrictions. While the NFL penalized the Broncos with fines and lost draft picks, critics point out that some voters are likely using their ballots to informally "punish" Shanahan.
