The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton for three main reasons: the league that became the National Football League was founded there on September 17, 1920, and the Canton Bulldogs were an early powerhouse, becoming the NFL’s first back-to-back champions in 1922 and 1923. Jim Thorpe, one of the first major stars of professional football, began his pro career with the Bulldogs in 1915. Finally, in the early 1960s, Canton’s citizens also mounted a determined, organized campaign that ultimately secured the Hall of Fame for their city.
