Back in the 1960s, the NFL was far from the powerhouse it is today. Owners constantly argued over money and television rights, and smaller franchises were struggling to survive. That’s when Pete Rozelle stepped in with a bold idea: Share national TV revenue equally among every team.

Many owners resisted, but the move helped stabilize the league and created the competitive balance fans know today.

Rozelle later helped pull off what many thought was impossible: merging the NFL with the AFL in 1966. That historic deal eventually created the Super Bowl and transformed pro football into America’s biggest sport.
