Imagine turning on Sunday Football and tuning in to a kickoff thousands of miles outside the U.S. Roger Goodell has officially confirmed that the NFL’s long-term vision extends far beyond domestic borders.

While the blueprint is set, the actual timeline remains wrapped in mystery.

The NFL shifted from an expansion blueprint to an operational developmental league by launching the World League of American Football (WLAF) in 1991, which was later rebranded as NFL Europe. The league tested the viability of long-term international hubs by placing fully operational teams in European markets, featuring foundation franchises like the London Monarchs, Barcelona Dragons, and Frankfurt Galaxy.

While it proved a passionate fan base existed, particularly in Germany, where later additions like the Berlin Thunder flourished, the venture cost the NFL an estimated $30 million per season, prompting the league to fold the developmental teams in 2007 to pivot toward regular-season showcases.
