By the time Day 3 rolls around, the draft usually settles into a rhythm. Most teams feel like they’ve already done the heavy lifting. Starters are picked, needs are addressed, and what’s left is depth. That’s how Tyreek Hill kept sliding in 2016.
The speed was obvious, but so were the concerns, and teams hesitated. With the 2026 draft just days away, every front office will say they’re prepared for these moments but this is exactly where decisions tend to get conservative.
At pick 165, the Kansas City Chiefs made a straightforward call. No big statement, just a bet that the upside was worth it. It didn’t feel like much at the time. But that’s the part that sticks. The draft isn’t always about who goes early; it’s about who teams are willing to take a chance on when the board feels thin.
