On December 15, 1984, the Seattle Seahawks became the first professional sports team to retire a jersey number in honor of its fans. The iconic No. 12 was set aside to celebrate the “12th Man” the passionate supporters whose deafening cheers at home games created one of the loudest and most intimidating atmospheres in the NFL.
