Washington Redskins (now known as Commanders) Hall of Fame tackle Turk Edwards suffered the most bizarre career-ending injury in NFL history. In 1940, the 255-pound lineman walked to the center of the field as team captain for a game against the New York Giants. After completing the standard midfield coin toss and shaking hands with the opposing captain, Edwards spun around to trot back to his team's sideline.

As he pivoted, his cleats became deeply entangled in the grass turf. The sudden resistance caused his previously vulnerable knee to violently buckle and collapse under his weight. He never played another down of football again, forced into an immediate retirement without a single defender ever touching him.
