The first NFL Draft was held on Feb. 8, 1936, when representatives of the league’s nine franchises gathered in Philadelphia at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, a venue chosen in part because it was owned by relatives of then commissioner Bert Bell.

A total of 81 players were selected across nine rounds. The Eagles held the first overall pick and chose Heisman Trophy winner Jay Berwanger, a halfback from the University of Chicago, but he chose not to play professional football, which was fairly common at the time. None of the Eagles’ selections from that draft appeared in a regular-season game.
