Serving from 1960 to 1991, Tunney earned the title ‘Dean of NFL Referees’ through 31 seasons of high-stakes officiating. Tunney’s "Dean" moniker was a nod to both his longevity and his career as a school superintendent. He brought a disciplined, educational approach to the gridiron, prioritizing clear communication and consistent rule application.

By authoring training materials and mentoring younger officials, he formalized the standards for the modern ‘white hat.’
