Back in Washington, Cousins played two straight seasons (2016 & 2017) on the franchise tag instead of signing a long-term deal. Most players avoid that because it risks injury and losing future guaranteed money. Cousins did the opposite . He took the short-term, fully guaranteed tag money twice and stayed confident he’d land something bigger. It worked out massively.
In 2018, he signed with the Vikings on a fully guaranteed 3-year, $84 million contract, which was almost unheard of for an NFL QB at the time. That deal helped push the league toward more guaranteed money in quarterback contracts.
