In the early 1950s, the NFL nearly ditched the classic brown "pigskin" to help fans watching on grainy, black-and-white TVs. Because the dark ball was almost invisible on screen, the league experimented with bright white and luminous yellow footballs for night games and broadcasts.
While they were easier for viewers to spot, players hated them, complaining that the paint made the balls slippery and caused them to vanish against white jerseys. By 1957, the league solved the visibility issue by mandating contrasting uniforms instead, allowing the iconic brown leather ball to make its permanent comeback.
