Prior to the 1990s, the phrase 'Organized Team Activities' (OTAs) didn't even exist in the NFL lexicon. Before the league and the NFLPA formally structured the offseason, spring practices were a chaotic, unregulated Wild West.
Coaches routinely staged grueling, full-contact practices in the blistering May heat, famously nicknamed 'Voluntary-Mandatory' sessions because any player who dared to skip them was swiftly cut or benched.
The modern, strictly regulated OTA framework we see today was actually born out of the historic 1993 Collective Bargaining Agreement. To protect players from offseason burnout and injuries, the league officially codified these spring sessions, permanently banning shoulder pads, outlawing live contact, and limiting on-field work to a strict two hours per day.

Hint: One that drives the game.
