Tom Brady’s Original Draft Report Recovered

Welcome to the fourth edition of the DraftCast newsletter! Tim Wood here, host of the EssentiallySports DraftCast with Tony Pauline.

What an exciting week it has been. It began with Tony and me in the same podcast space in a blustery New York City, where we recorded this week’s episode focused on undervalued draft prospects of the past that have overachieved in the NFL.

It’s a timely topic as the NFL Draft season has kicked into its next phase this week. Tony left New York for Frisco, Texas, first to check out the Shrine Bowl prospects, and is now in Mobile to scout the stars at the 2026 Senior Bowl.

It’s the last game tape players have to put forth before they head off to train for the NFL Combine. For many lower-level players, it’s a chance to create an apples-to-apples comparison to show they can shine against higher-touted prospects from bigger schools.

For us at the DraftCast, it’s meat-and-potatoes time. The evaluations start to turn into true discussions between teams and players. And for guys like Tony, it’s a chance to talk in person with team officials to see how team needs are evolving into draft-pick priorities.

It’s no coincidence that Tony dropped his first two-round mock draft this week, along with a MASSIVE update to his Big Board. Fellow Draftnik Luke Hubbard also dropped his pre-Super Bowl first-round mock. The NFL head coaching openings are rapidly being filled, so we can truly start to predict which names and skill sets fit with all the new philosophies among the teams drafting at the top of the 2026 Draft.

As Tony gets back to his New York scouting war room, you’ll start to see in-depth player evaluations over the next few weeks, as well as projected teams attached to the top players on the big board.

For many scouts, the biggest miss of their careers was Tom Brady. Why did the legend slip through the cracks? Tony Pauline revisits his original evaluation of the quarterback and explains why league insiders never viewed him as a can’t-miss prospect, a reminder that even the sharpest scouting rooms get it wrong.

Every draft cycle produces its share of overlooked talent, players who slide far lower than their ability warrants. Our Draft expert revisits 10 prospects who were undervalued on draft day, only to outperform expectations and rewrite their narratives once they reached the NFL.

On our Draft big board, you’ll see Tony’s rankings and scouting reports for each prospect. And you can build a watchlist by clicking on the star at the far right of each prospect ranking.

Few NFL players embodied a true hero’s mentality like Roger Staubach. Drafted in the 10th round out of the Naval Academy in 1964, he delayed his NFL debut to fulfill his military service, including a tour in Vietnam. When Staubach finally joined the Cowboys in 1969, he delivered immediately, leading Dallas to two Super Bowl titles, earning six Pro Bowl selections, and winning Super Bowl VI MVP honors.
