While the NFL Draft is a primetime spectacle today, it took a major leap forward in 1989 when it was televised for the first time by ESPN from the Marriott Marquis in New York City. This wasn't just a broadcast milestone; it was the arrival of a new era. It was the first year Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson sat at the helm for the Dallas Cowboys, famously taking Troy Aikman as the #1 overall pick.

The 1989 class also set an incredible standard for talent, producing four of the first five picks as Hall of Famers: Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, and Deion Sanders. Beyond the superstars, it was the first year that underclassmen were officially eligible to be drafted, a rule change that fundamentally shifted how teams scouted college talent.
